Course Description: Biosecurity practices in aquaculture are essential to prevent and control the introduction and spread of diseases among aquatic organisms. By implementing effective biosecurity measures, fish farming facilities aim to safeguard the health of their stocks, mitigate economic losses associated with disease outbreaks, and protect the surrounding environment from potential harm. This is the first half of a series of courses aimed at helping fish health professionals to identify potential risks, assess, and improve biosecurity measures in different fish farming settings, contributing to the development of more sustainable aquaculture production, operations and learn to assess welfare indicators for making informed management decisions that promote their welfare.

Target audience: Training orientated at veterinarians and fish health biologists wanting to gain a solid knowledge on biosecurity and how to implement and monitor it in an aquaculture set up/facility.

Outline course:

LECTURE 1: Biosecurity in Aquaculture

Learning goals:

  • Gain general concepts on fish health and welfare
  • Understand what is biosecurity and why is it important
  • Know the main infectious agents and main routes of transmission in aquaculture
  • Understand what are the key elements that need to be considered when trying to improve biosecurity

LECTURE 2: Risk assessments (RA) for aquatic diseases management

Learning goals:

  • Gain knowledge on what a RA is, what is it used for
  • Learn how to create a RA
  • Be aware of important considerations for RA

LECTURE 3: Cleaning and disinfection

Learning goals:

  • Understand the importance of cleaning and disinfection
  • How biofilms are created and their risks
  • Know the main agents that are available for cleaning and disinfection and their properties

LECTURE 4: Practical session/study cases Learning goals:

To apply learned knowledge to practical farming cases

Training is aimed at veterinarians and fish health biologists. Admission is based on a review of the application form, and a confirmation email will be sent upon acceptance on December 9th. Deadline: 9th December 2024 or until spaces are filled (maximum of 30 participants)
