Course Description:

Biosecurity practices in aquaculture are essential to prevent and control the introduction and spread of diseases among aquatic organisms. By implementing effective biosecurity measures, fish farming facilities aim to safeguard the health of their stocks, mitigate economic losses associated with disease outbreaks, and protect the surrounding environment from potential harm. This is the second half of a series of courses aimed at helping fish health professionals to identify potential risks, assess, and improve biosecurity measures in different fish farming settings, contributing to the development of more sustainable aquaculture production.

Target audience:

Training is aimed at veterinarians and fish health biologists, wishing to gain knowledge on biosecurity and learn how to implement and monitor it in an aquaculture facility.

Outline course:

Lecture 1: Biosecurity audit

Learning goals:

  • Understand what a biosecurity audit is and what is it used for.
  • Be able to carry out a biosecurity audit.

Lecture 2: Tools to complement a biosecurity audit

Learning goals:

  • Know what tools are available in the market to complement a biosecurity audit and make it more relevant.
  • Be able to use quantification tools to complement a biosecurity audit.

Lecture 3: Recommendations and solutions for producers

Learning goals:

  • Be able to recommend what is the best approach to different biosecurity challenges.
  • Be able to recommend best procedures for cleaning and disinfection.
  • Be able to recommend what cleaning/disinfection agents would be best to use in different situations.

Lecture 4: EU legislation on biosecurity

Learning goals:

  • Know what the current EU legislation is.
  • Know where and how to check EU legislation.

Future editions of the Aquaculture Biosecurity Assessors training will be held in the future, so it is possible to complete part 2 now, and register for part 1 in the future.
